Touching the Millennial Porcelain Capital, Experiencing the Spirit of Craftsmanship
— International Students Embark on an Intangible Cultural Heritage Journey in Jingdezhen

On May 26, the Faculty of International Studies of Jiujiang University organized a two-day intangible cultural heritage experience trip to Jingdezhe. Centered around ceramic culture, the event offered participants an immersive encounter with the profound cultural legacy and enduring craftsmanship spirit of the millennia-old Porcelain Capital.

During the trip, the group visited Jingdezhen Ceramic University, a ceramic studio, the Taoxichuan Creative Block, the Imperial Kiln Factory ruins, and the Jingdezhen China Ceramic Museum. At the ceramic studio, under the careful guidance of Mr. Zhan Naiming, an outstanding painter recognized by the Annual China Calligraphy and Painting Forum, the students completed their own blue-and-white porcelain paintings, engaging hands-on with traditional ceramic craftsmanship.

After the event, students from different countries shared their reflections. TADOUM DJOUBOUOSSIE NAOMI from Cameroon said: “This trip truly allowed me to experience the unique charm of Chinese ceramic culture. The hands-on experience of painting blue-and-white porcelain deepened my understanding of craftsmanship and strengthened my love for traditional Chinese culture.”

JINDAL SHYAMAL from India remarked: “Every corner of Jingdezhen breathes history and art. This journey not only broadened my horizons but also brought me precious friendships and unforgettable memories. Different languages and different hometowns met on the same porcelain body. Jingdezhen taught me that beauty needs no translation.”

SEESOD PRIMPRAPHAPHORN from Thailand shared: “The ceramic painting workshop was unforgettable. Although I lacked confidence in my artistic abilities, the instructor’s encouragement and affirmation helped me regain my self-belief.”

MUHAMMAD IBRAHEEM from Pakistan said: “The clay taking shape between my fingers was challenging yet highly rewarding. Jingdezhen is a living art sanctuary where tradition continues to thrive.”

JANICE NAYRA HAVOR from Ghana noted: “My favorite part was painting plates and pots by hand at the ceramic workshop — it was both fun and creative. Ceramic art demands patience and attention to detail.”

SAWATPON THIPTARA from Thailand wrote: “The porcelain painting workshop was the most memorable part of the trip. Seeing my hand-painted vase and plate being recognized gave me a real sense of achievement.”

VUTHY SREYNICH from Cambodia said: “This study tour deepened my understanding of traditional Chinese culture and the importance of cultural heritage preservation. I also created many beautiful memories with my peers.”

A total of 30 Chinese and international students and teachers took part in the event. Through this hands-on cultural experience, everyone gained a personal appreciation of the unique charm of traditional Chinese ceramic craftsmanship and intangible cultural heritage.
